The Dutch flower fields have been the symbol for the Bollenstreek area for more than 400 years. It’s also famous for the beautiful Keukenhof Gardens and the Flower Parade.

The old dunes turned out to have exactly the right ingredients to grow the best flower bulbs in the world. The region has become the center of the worldwide flower bulb trade. Every spring millions of visitors come to enjoy the blooming flower fields. Also popular are the world-famous flower park Keukenhof and the annual Bloemencorso Bollenstreek.

The Flower Fields

The most famous bulb flower from the region is of course the Dutch tulip. But besides the tulip, there are many more flower bulb species that are grown in the bulb-growing region. Daffodils, Hyacinths but also summer bulbs such as Dahlias and Callas are grown in large numbers. The flower fields are mainly located between the charming bulb villages Lisse, Hillegom, Noordwijkerhout and Voorhout. The region is just a 30 minutes drive from the city centre’s of Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden and The Hague.

Cycling and walking along the Dutch flower fields

Every year millions of visitors come to enjoy the flowers in Keukenhof and the surrounding flower fields. The small-scale character of the flower fields in the bulb-growing region have an extra attraction. On your bike and on foot you will soon see several landscape variants on your route. There are also many monuments and places of interest in which you can discover the rich past of the flower fields. The extensive cycling and walking nodes network makes it easy to follow a route.

Would you like to be able to relax and enjoy the flowers in the bulb-growing region? Then consider booking a hotel or bed & breakfast. There is a very wide choice from luxury hotels to cozy bed and breakfasts. For families there are nice holiday parks and campsites. And what about an overnight stay on the beach? Every beach season there are more than 80 beach houses on the beach where you can fall asleep with the sun setting in the sea. In short, there is a suitable overnight location for everyone.

    • Around the Bollenstreek you will find the oldest cities in the Netherlands. You can visit cities such as Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden and The Hague within half an hour’s drive. But also Delft, Rotterdam and Utrecht can be visited in less than an hour.
